Random poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been studied by XPS and SIMS. It is demonstrated that the mole fraction of lactide units in the copolymer can be determined by analysis of selected ion intensities in the SIMS spectra. The results are in good agreement with XPS data and the SIMS ion yields of the four ions in the (3M–O)·+ series from PLGA are shown to be almost identical. The relative ion intensities in this series closely match the binomial distribution expected from a random copolymer.
