High fluorescence quantum yields are a feature of the oligo-para-phenylene 1 (R = C(CH3)2C14H29). This compound can be readily synthesized by the trimerization of a diterphenylyl-acetylene. If a further phenyl ring is to be introduced into each terphenylene chain, a different synthesis route must be chosen.
