Tribute to Braun-Menéndez honors his hypertension legacy; leaves open relevance to current evidence-based care.
I am deeply grateful to Professor Houssay and his group for this opportunity to do honor to my old and cherished friend, Eduardo Braun-Menéndez. I want his wife and family to know how much we in the United States respected and loved him for his warm human understanding as well as for his accomplishments in the field of hypertension. He was one of the world's great men. I suppose everyone, sooner or later, meets someone whom he knows instantly is going to be a friend for life. This happened to me when I met Eduardo, but the meeting occurred only after several years of sharp scientific competition. Dr. Houssay and Dr. Braun-Menéndez, as you know, were the leading figures in the field of hypertension in South America, and it is but natural that we were working along roughly the same lines.
