An intense light pulse of 1.0 eV photons generates a hot-carrier plasma in germanium with a density of several 1017 cm−3. Cooling of the carriers results in a rise of the transmission at ℏω=1.0 eV within a few picoseconds. Three carrier-phonon interactions based on deformation potential scattering contribute to the carrier relaxation: electron and hole intravalley scattering and intervalley electron scattering. The interaction constants for carrier cooling do not depend on lattice temperature between 30 and 300 K.
