A description is given of an instrument for measuring turbulent concentration fluctuations in the liquid phase. A calibrated conductivity cell is used to measure the conductivity of a small volume surrounding a fixed point in a turbulent fluid. The output of the cell is fed into suitable electronic apparatus. Mean-square and mean-absolute-value concentration fluctuations are measured. The method gives promise of providing a new experimental technique for the study of turbulence. Measurements permit calculation of a scale of turbulence with a standard deviation of ±2.8%. Details of relation between concentration fluctuation measurements and turbulence parameters are provided in another paper.
