Difficulties in the application of statistical moment theory to experimental elution curves are associated with the upper limit of the integrals being infinite time. While such a limit can be performed in theory, it can never be obtained experimentally due to noise and baseline drift. Partial normal statistical moments, which do not exhibit such difficulties, are defined and calculated for a simple capillary chromatographic system. It is shown that a single dimensionless group, which is a measure of the rate of diffusional mass transfer in the liquid film relative to the convective gas-phase mass transfer in the axial direction, completely characterizes the elution curve and its moments.
