The anion BrF 1 is almost perfectly octahedral in crystalline Cs⊕BrF. This finding is contrary to the common belief that non-bonding electron pairs are sterically active. The reason for the structure of 1 can be that the free electrons have s character and are therefore arranged centrosymmetrically. The associate of IF5 and F⊖, on the other hand, has distorted octahedral geometry, like the isoelectronic XeF6.
