Retrospective review reveals uveitic glaucoma and extended topical steroid use increase tube exposure risk after Ahmed valve implantation, indicating a need for tailored postoperative management.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with tube exposure after Ahmed valve implantation. Methods: This retrospective review included 86 patients (86 glaucomatous eyes) who underwent Ahmed valve implantation. Data of patients with and without tube exposure were analyzed. Results: Five eyes (5.80%) showed tube exposure after Ahmed valve implantation. The eyes with tube exposure showed a prolonged postoperative use of topical steroids (p = 0.035) and higher percentage of uveitic (60%) and neovascular glaucoma (40%). Uveitic glaucoma (hazard ratio [HR], 4.85; p = 0.023) and prolonged postoperative use of topical steroids (HR, 8.14; p = 0.004) significantly increased the risk of tube exposure. Conclusions: Uveitic glaucoma and prolonged postoperative use of topical steroids were significantly associated with tube exposure.
