Particles of bacteriophage T4 contain a single DNA molecule weighing about 130 × 106 daltons (Rubenstein et al., 1961; Davison et al., 1961). The experiments to be reported here show that exceptional particles in T4 lysates contain short DNA molecules and are functionally incomplete. Several exceptional particles can complement one another and produce normal particles. The mechanism involved has obvious similarities to what must happen during genetic recombination in general.
