A direct measurement has been made of the energy relaxation time between hot electrons and the lattice in n-type InSb in the hydrogen temperature range. The electrons were heated slightly above the lattice temperature by application of a short current pulse and the observation of the variation of mobility with time enabled the relaxation time to be calculated. The results are not in good agreement with theory. Although the value predicted by polar optical scattering (Stratton) agrees with the measured value of 3.5 nsec at 20.4 °K, the theoretical value at 14.6 °K is an order of magnitude too great.
