Why the study?
Experimental studies suggest protective roles for sirtuins in cardiovascular disease, but data regarding sirtuins in acute myocardial infarction patients are scarce.
Population
40 patients with AMI and 40 patients with normal coronary arteries
Comparison
AMI patients vs control subjects with normal coronary arteries
Design
Case-control study

Sirtuin levels lack acute prognostic value in AMI; leaves open roles in prevention or recovery phases.
Serum sirtuin 1, 3, and 6 levels do not significantly differ between AMI patients and controls, nor do they correlate with standard prognostic markers, suggesting they may not have a prominent protective or prognostic role in the acute phase of myocardial infarction.
