The extended boundary condition method is used to calculate the scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave from a finite dielectric cylinder of circular cross section. Three applications are presented: the backscattering properties of ice-like rods in the microwave region are calculated and compared with existing experimental data; the polarisation ratio of forward scattered light is computed in order to analyse an optical system for fibre discrimination; the extinction spectrum of rod-shaped ionic crystallites in the infrared is calculated and interpreted in terms of the characteristic phonon modes.
