The effect of the addition of CCl₂{F}₂$ on the optical breakdown threshold of argon is described. It is found that for slowly rising laser pulses, C${Cl}₂F₂ inhibits breakdown, while for rapidly rising pulses, it enhances breakdown. The results are discussed in relation to existing breakdown theory.
