The anhydrous crystallization of an alkali basalt from the Azores was studied at 1 atm. total pressure and under p(O₂)'s constrained by three gas mixtures: CO₂, CO₂/CO = 10 and CO₂/CO = 2. The effects of oxidation are to (1) increase the stabilities of spinel and clinopyroxene and to decrease those of olivine and plagioclase, (2) promote the crystallization of magnesioferrite-rich spinel and acmitic pyroxene, and (3) cause nepheline normative liquids to become saturated and oversaturated with respect to silica.
