Theoretical analysis maps the intersections between commons and solidarity economies, suggesting coordinated labor organization and shared ecosystems provide systemic alternatives to capitalism.
How do we understand the relationship between the commons and the social and solidarity economy (SSE)? In both phenomena, we find different theoretical approaches that, depending on how they are combined, can give very different meanings and political outcomes. After mapping various conceptual perspectives to both the commons and the SSE, this article selects two specific approaches to combine them through two fundamental issues: thinking about labour organization as a common, and reinforcing or developing ecosystems of the commons and the SSE in order to scale up and think systemically about alternatives to capitalism.
