Thematic textual analysis reveals shifting comedic framing and advocacy among Jewish comic actors after October 7, 2023, highlighting a new dynamic in celebrity engagement against antisemitism.
Humor has a marked impact on public life, political culture, and the expression of cultural, religious, and ethnic identity. It is useful in times of tragedy as well as in times of peace and prosperity. The research considers whether the events of October 7, 2023 reflect a turning point for Jewish American humor, the expression of cultural, religious, and political values, and engagement within the public sphere among prominent Jewish comic actors. Focusing on the in-character creativity and out-of-character advocacy of eight prominent Jewish comic actors, the research uses thematic textual analysis to assess trends in reactions to the conflict across social media, in mainstream press commentary, and in circulating media coverage focused on celebrity engagement. Showcasing responses that range from heightened involvement and public engagement to combat antisemitism to relative silence and a questioning of upbringing and history, the research suggests that the events of October 7, 2023 reflect a new dynamic for in-character creativity, American Jewish humor, and out-of-character celebrity issue advocacy.
