A cell population kinetic model was designed to simulate the effects of fractionated radiation therapy. A computer program was used to search for best-fitting and biologically valid estimates of 7 parameters required to define the final surviving fraction. Parameters were fitted to crude clinical data on reactions in irradiated skin, central nervous system, lung, and gut, studied over a wide range of field sizes and fractionation schemes. Probit analysis proved the results to be statistically acceptable. Solution sets were compatible with clinical and experimental observation. The model is presumed adequate for studying real kinetic changes in irradiated cell populations.
