Measurement of the variation in the light scattered from precipitates produced by moisture diffusing along a grain boundary is developed into a method for determining the grain boundary diffusion coefficient D of the water. Suitable treatment of data from nominally pure bicrystals enables an approximate value for D at room temperature to be obtained by two independent methods.
