The diffusion of Ni2+ and Ba2+ in single crystal magnesium oxide has been studied over the temperature range 1100 to 2500 °C using radio isotopes and a sectioning technique. Results indicate that the enthalpies of motion of these two ions in MgO differ by about 10% only. Below about 1500 °C, segregation of impurities to dislocations has a marked effect on the activation energy for diffusion in agreement with the results obtained in cation self‐diffusion studies previously published. The formation enthalpy of a Schottky pair has also been confirmed.
