Single crystal samples of KCl:Hg2+, KCl:Hg2+ :OH−, and KCl:HgO were prepared by both melt-doping and by various diffusion techniques. Each species has a characteristic absorption spectrum. Only KCl:Hg2+ can be prepared with a single impurity species. KCl:Hg2+, KCl:Hg2+ :OH−, and KCl:HgO are always mixed with KCl:Hg2+. The existence of these three species explains the discrepancy between previously reported spectra of mercurydoped KCl.
