Numerical studies on the soliton dynamics in passively mode-locked fiber ring lasers with dispersion-managed cavity have revealed the soliton period-doubling route to chaos, which confirmed our previous experimental observation of the phenomenon (Zhao L. M. et al. , Opt. Expr. , 12 (2004) 4573). In addition, our numerical simulations also verified that the period-doubling bifurcations and route to chaos are other intrinsic properties of the solitons in the lasers, which are caused by the deterministic dynamics of the system. Period-doubling of various periodic soliton states have been numerically obtained.
