Summary The calibration of proportional counters by means of a very few suitably chosen radioactive sources which are used to excite the fluorescence radiation of various elements is described. The efficiency of excitation is high and the method is of wide application. The accurate identification of isomeric transitions using proportional tubes is demonstrated.
