An assessment has been made of the inhomogeneities in niobium alloy superconductive wires which arise from segregation of alloying elements during ingot solidification. In 0·010 in. diameter wire of Nb-25% Zr, striated microstructures are obtained, the bands being about 2 μm wide and representing composition variations of about ±2% Zr. The corresponding data for Nb-48%Ti areabout 5μm and +8% Ti. A model relating flux jumps to periodically banded microstructures is developed.
