Properties of well known (e.g. III-V) and less well known (e.g. II-IV-V 2 ) semiconductors are reviewed, with emphasis on the optical nonlinearity of the lesser known materials. Diamond-derived structures are discussed. Possible techniques for assessing the usefulness of new materials, and for crystal growth are also discussed.
