Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies have been made of lead borate and lead silicate glasses gamma irradiated and maintained at liquid-nitrogen temperature. In lead borate glasses of low PbO content, a spectrum similar to the five-line spectrum which has been observed in alkali borate glasses was observed, while a different, asymmetric spectrum appeared in glasses of high lead oxide content. This latter spectrum is identified as due to the O− center near one or more Pb++ ions.
