The series of homologues of 4-propionyl-4′-n-alkanoyloxyazobenzenes with n ranging from zero to sixteen has been prepared. Optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry have been used to study the mesomorphic behaviour of these compounds. All the homologues are liquid crystals with nematic as well as smectic phases. The presence of smectic polymorphism and of monotropic phases may be considered as the most important characteristics of these compounds.
