Earlier studies by neutron diffraction of the occurrence of two antiferromagnetic structures in platinum-iron alloys in the neighbourhood of the composition Pt 3 Fe have been extended to the ternary system in which some of the iron is replaced by manganese. The characteristic (½00) structure only appears when there are more than 25% of iron atoms. Manganese atoms function differently from iron, in agreement with the fact that Pt 3 Mn is ferromagnetic.
