The Morin transition in hematite is studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy of single crystal and polycrystalline samples in the absence and in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to [111]. In both the cases the spin rotation of the Fe3+ ion takes place with a jump. When an external magnetic field of 6 kG is applied the Morin point is lowered by 3 K. The temperature dependence of the Mössbauer spectra parameters shows a peculiar anomaly in the isomer shift. Thermal hysteresis is found only in polycrystalline samples.
