Summary A linear relation between two variates, both of which are measured with error, cannot be identified, but it is possible to identify bounds for its position and slope. It is shown how it is possible to test whether the observed data show a significant divergence from the hypothesis that the linear relation passes through a specified point in the plane. This test is then applied to the relationship between rainfall and run-off.
