Marked changes in the infra-red emission bands of cadmium sulphide phosphors have been observed after irradiation with 60 Co gamma rays. The computed number of displaced atoms by direct production of defects from the ordered lattice is much smaller than for electron bombardment experiments and suggests a Seitz mechanism for defect formation.
