Four bacterial strains, isolated from sick or dead resting larvae ofPectinophora gossypiella, were tested against larvae of this pest. In the first test, mortality rates among larvae injected with saline suspensions of threeBacillusstrains, were as follows:Bacillus thuringiensisvar.finitimus100%,B. t.var.thuringiensis92 % andB. cereus48 %, as compared to mortality of 8 % in the control. In the other test, injection ofB. polymyxa, induced no higher mortality among treated larvae than in the control. L. D.50ofB. finitimuson resting larvae was 9.8 × 103viable spores (2.65 × 10−5mg of spore‐crystal powder)/larvae. Four infectivity tests were carried out on active larvae ofP. gossypiella, which indicated thatB. t. finitimuswas highly pathogenic to these larvae, inducing high mortality rates within 1–3 days, after feeding on contaminated diet. In case of young larvae (2nd and 3rd instar), L. D.50was 6.4 × 109viable spores (0.492 mg of spore‐crystal powder)/ml of diet. In case of old larvae (4th, instar), L. D.50was 2.2 × 107viable spores (0.0017 mg of spore‐crystal powder)/ml of diet. First instar larvae were also highly susceptible to this bacterial strain, whether applied on the diet surface, or sprayed on the eggs.
