An experimental investigation has been made of the interaction in air between low energy (<250 mJ) single transverse mode TEA CO 2 laser pulses and various solid targets. The ignition and propagation of the resulting absorption waves have been studied with a high-speed framing camera, and it is shown that radial losses from the plasma have a significant effect on the degree of laser-target decoupling.
