In order to clarify the effect of zinc chloride on the radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN), a complex of AN with ZnCl2 was studied. The white hygroscopic crystalline complex (AN/ZnCl2 = 1/1 in molar ratio) melted at 20–30°C. and its infrared spectra showed that the nitrile group in AN participated to form the complex with ZnCl2. Polymerization of the AN‐ZnCl2 complex was easily induced by radical initiators or ultraviolet or gamma ray irradiation, even in the solid state. Solubility tests and infrared spectra indicated that the resulting polymer had the same chain structure as polyacrylonitrile. It was also observed that both vinyl and nitrile groups participated in the high temperature polymerization above 150°C.
