Abstract 2‐Vinylmercaptobenzothiazole (VMBT) may be polymerized to a low molecular weight polymer by using an azo catalyst. Conventional peroxide initiators attack the monomer in nonpolymer forming reactions. VMBT copolymerizes with styrene, acrylonitrile, and methyl methacrylate. Reactivity ratios for VMBT/methyl acrylate were determined to be 1.0 and 0.1. Monomer and polymer were compared in reactions involving oxidation, nitration, nitrogen quaternization, and rearrangement of substituents from sulfur to nitrogen.
