The effect of a number of benzylidene and furfurylidene nitriles on the polymerization of styrene is investigated. Whereas the former class copolymerize readily, the latter are powerful inhibitors of polymerization. In the case of benzylidenemalonitrile, the effect of the penultimate monomer unit on further copolymerization is very marked.
