SummaryThe effects of both surface roughness and substrate toughness on peel value were investigated for plated styrene homopolymer and copolymer systems. Surface roughness was produced artificially by an embossing process. It was found that the results could be expressed empirically in the form: peel value=(chemical component) X (geometric component) X (polymer toughness component). These results also fit a theoretical equation which links peel value with chemical adhesion, surface geometry, and properties of the polymer.
