The Spontanea complex of S. bicolor (L.) Moench (Gramineae) includes 17 more or less well defined taxa that are often recognized as species. Four of these, S. elliotii, S. hewisonii, S. niloticum, and S. sudanense, represent stable hybrids between cultivated sorghums and members of Spontanea. The remaining taxa were subdivided among varieties aethiopicum, arundinaceum, verticilliflorum, and virgatum. Cultivated sorghums probably originated from several different races of var. verticilliflorum. Hybridization between cultivated races and members of the wild varieties is increasing the variability of the Spontanea as well as Sativa complexes.
