Summary The method of Hennigwas applied to reconstruct the phylogeny of the molluscs. The result is a scheme of arguments which makes clear the relationships between the classes of molluscs and other animal phyla. Consideration of the anatomy of recent molluscs and the evaluation of certain features as plesiomorphies or apomorphies leads to a concept of relationships which, in some points, differs from common opinions: Monoplacophora and Gastropoda are phylogenetic sister groups; Caudofoveata and Solenogastres also have a common origin and therefore it is correct to place both in the “Aplacophora”; but there is no justification to combine Aplacophora and Polyplacophora in the “Amphineura” or “Aculifera”. The relationships of molluscs and annelids are closer than die relationships between molluscs and platyhelmindies.
