Transition probabilities are calculated for thenp(n+ 1)s→np2transition array in the group IV elements using relativistic self-consistent-field wave functions. Formulas are presented for the dipole length, the dipole velocity, and the dipole acceleration operators and the effective-operator formalism was used to evaluate relativistic matrix elements. A comparison is made between the theoretically calculated lifetimes and values obtained from reliable experimental measurements.
