Summary Comparison of infra‐red spectra of lignins and humic materials obtained before and after saturation with Cu showed that Cu saturation induced changes in the shape of the OH absorption bands and pronounced shifts in the C=O (1700 cm ‐1 ) bands to lower frequencies. Differential thermograms indicated that Cu and Ca saturation reduced the thermal stabilities of lignins and humic materials. There was more reduction in stability with Cu than with Ca saturation and with lignins than with humic materials.
