Case report reveals complete remission following combination chemotherapy in esophageal small cell carcinoma, highlighting the clinical impact of prompt multiagent treatment.
Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is extremely rare, and usually has a rapidly progressive course. This article reports a patient with synchronous multiple small cell carcinomas of the esophagus who had a prompt and complete (although brief) remission following treatment with a combination chemotherapy program used in patients with small cell lung cancers. Recognition of this entity is important, since appropriate treatment with multiagent chemotherapy has a major impact on prognosis.
