Primary nursing cannot succeed on any unit whose head nurse is not committed to this system of nursing care. To lead her staff into primary nursing, the head nurse must accept a change in her own role, in her leadership style, and in her functions as unit manager. If she looks upon the transition as a challenge, as a means to personal and professional growth, the head nurse can make primary nursing a success.
