Design-based research reveals high usability for a digital emotion monitoring platform among adolescents and school counselors, indicating potential for scalable guidance practices.
This study presents the development and validation of DIGIMOT (Digital Emotion Monitoring Tool) designed as a digital emotional journaling platform to support emotional awareness through emotional reflection and school counselor monitoring. Using a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, the study involved iterative co-design, pilot testing, and user evaluation with 108 adolescents and five school counselors in West Java, Indonesia. DIGIMOT features guided emotional prompts, automated emotion classification, and a counselor dashboard for real-time emotional monitoring. Usability results indicate high acceptance, with System Usability Scale (SUS) scores of 83.57 (adolescents) and 85.5 (school counselors), classified as excellent. Qualitative findings reveal that adolescents reported positive experiences related to emotional expression and reflection. Counselors reported that DIGIMOT facilitated early identification of emotional concerns and their ability to prioritize adolescents in need. The study concludes that DIGIMOT offers a practical, scalable, and potentially useful digital support tool for integrating digital tool into school guidance practices.
