Observational study reveals up to 9.6% rate of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia following hysterectomy for precancer, indicating ongoing need for post-surgical HPV and cytology screening.
The treatment of patients with cervical precancerous state (CIN2+) is accompanied by the risk of its recurrence when using an excision method and risk of the development of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) after total hysterectomy. The development of VaIN after hysterectomy for CIN2+ reaches 9.6%. The persistence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV HCR) has a prognostic value for the development of VaIN2+ after total hysterectomy. The older the patient’s age, the higher the risk of developing VaIN. For timely diagnosis of the disease after hysterectomy, subsequent vaginal screening remains necessary in the scope of cytological examination and HPV testing.
