Policy framework outlines forecast-triggered anticipatory interventions for at-risk populations, highlighting strategies to prevent El Niño-driven malnutrition crises.
This is a draft outline of an “information package” for the preparation of strategic technical and policy information to prevent El Niño-driven risks to malnutrition, for risk communication, institutional capacity building, and training to be discussed with WHO NFS, Water, WHO/WMO , WME other interested groups. This information aims to support Ministries of Health (MoH) and partners, Nutrition- Health- Wash- Clusters, national UN Partners, to jointly plan, co-finance and deliver climate-informed anticipatory actions to prevent El Niño-driven risks to malnutrition from becoming maternal and child survival crises. The main objective is to support health authorities and partners, in at-risk countries, to raise awareness about El Niño 2026-27 driven risks to malnutrition and the development and activation of a forecast-triggered nutrition-health-wash-anticipatory action package before predictable climate shocks disrupt access to food, water and sanitation, health, nutrition services, and household care practices leading to malnutrition.
