A photoemission survey is presented for the effects of metal deposition on the cleaved, sub-monolayer oxidised Si(111) surface, Al reacts with the oxidised surface; In and Ag show minimal reactivity; Au and Ni react only with the clean Si, and Mn and V react with both clean and oxidised Si. The experimental reactivities are shown to follow the predictions of a bulk thermodynamic model.
