This article discusses the hypothesis that adsorption is the principal cause of removal of suspended matter during filtration through gravel, and was established by demonstrating that a relationship exists between the electrokinetic potential of the suspended material and the effectiveness with which it is removed during filtration; and, no fractionation of particles according to size occurs in the process of filtration. This experiment indicated that the principal cause for the removal of suspended material during filtration of turbid water through “aged” pea‐size gravel at a rate of 0.1 gpm/sq ft is adsorption, or some allied process, rather than straining, sedimentation, or both.
