Environmental assessment demonstrates sustainable catch limits in Hawaiian bottomfish fisheries, indicating stable harvest without causing disruption or overfishing.
Our analysis indicates that the ACL and AMs are unlikely to change the MHI Deep 7 bottomfish fishery in terms of gear types used, areas fished, level of catch or effort, or effects on target or non-target stocks or protected species. The commercial fishery has landed an annual average of 179,417 lb of Deep 7 bottomfish in the past 3 years and has not been constrained by ACLs since the 2010-11 fishing year. The proposed action is intended to prevent overfishing and provide for continued sustainable harvest of the MHI Deep 7 bottomfish resource.
