Well resolved photoelectron spectra of the HCl inner valence shell have been obtained with monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the 30-90 eV photon energy range. They show the limiting case of the "complete breakdown" of the molecular orbital picture when ionization takes place in the inner valence shell of HCl. The photoelectron data have been analyzed in comparison with the results obtained from X-UV absorption, L 23 - MM Auger and photon spectroscopy.
