The impact of recent experimental and theoretical studies of 5p excitation in Ba I on the problem of the double ionisation anomaly is considered. Energy coincidences between the ejected electron spectrum and photoabsorption thresholds allow real intermediate states (other than the one originally proposed) for two-step autoionisation to be located.
